SURF, SAND & CINEMA’ – BEACH MOVIES w. Annette & Frankie!

I’m pausing  – for one week – my five-part series on ‘The Biggest Hits of a Half-Century‘ featuring the #1 song of every year between 1940 and 1989.  To date we’ve heard four decades of the biggest annual hits, and I’ll get to the 1980s next Sunday (Oct.23rd).  This Sunday – the 16th – I’m delighted to partner with our sister station, VisionTV, and their ‘Surf, Sand  Cinema‘ series of five classic ‘beach movies’ of the early 60s.  These are the Annette and Frankie Avalon ‘guilty pleasures’ known as ‘Beach Party’, ‘Pajama Party’, ‘Bikini Beach Party’, ‘Muscle Beach Party’ and of course ‘Beach, Blanket Bingo’. Each one is a fun-filled romp into early 60s teen-fantasies of the beach, surfer girls and boys and the hijinks they got into.

I’ll play songs from each of the five movies, along with their story outlines and some of the many guest stars from the ‘golden age of Hollywood’ who found themselves hamming it up with the kids.  I hope you’ll tune into Vintage Favourites ‘at the beach’ with Frankie and Annette … and then also tune in to VISION-TV’s ‘Midnight Movies’ next week.

As well, this Sunday, I’ll salute Toronto singer Tommy Ambrose on his upcoming birthday, including a real rarity – his 1958 rock’n’roll recording. Plus ‘This Week in Zoomer Music‘ remembers Buddy Holly’s last recording session, Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary Concert, and the late Laura Nyro with her own version of one of the many songs she composed for others. ‘The Story Behind the Song‘ – ‘Someday Never Comes’ – is the story of how Creedence Clearwater Revival broke up 50 years ago this week.

I hope you’ll tune in for another episode of ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday between 2:00 and 4:30pm.
