Tens of thousands of Canadians are showing up in police data bases despite the fact they’ve never been convicted of a crime. Two years after passing legislation to protect innocent Ontario residents from unproven allegations showing up in their records, it remains unenforced. A Toronto Star investigation reveals tens of thousands of Canadians are being negatively impacted when it comes to background checks for careers, volunteer opportunities and travel. The province says the legislation is top priority but didn’t give a timeline for making it a law.
