The health-care system in Ontario is set for an overhaul on Tuesday when new legislation is introduced by the PC Government.
Health Minister Christine Elliott is not giving much away but has said that there have been changes made from a leaked draft version that the NDP revealed late last month.
She also confirmed that the legislation will not include two-tier care, private hospitals, making patients pay for more services out of pocket, or privatizing services such as long-term care inspections and the air ambulance service.
The NDP had raised concerns after the leaked draft bill appeared to show that Ontario was planning a health “super agency,” which would have allowed the government to roll local health integration networks, Cancer Care Ontario, eHealth Ontario and other government health agencies under that umbrella.
Speaking at Queen’s park on Monday, Elliott said that the changes will look to focus the health care system on the patient first and foremost and reduce hallway medicine by making sure people have access to the care they need.
