With those words Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
”We (Canada) will work with the international community to de-escalate the situation and to move forward so there is no more loss of civilian life,” Trudeau adds.
The call for a ceasefire comes after a statement over the weekend, when Global Affairs Canada urged ”all parties to take steps to immediately end all violence.”
That statement condemned the ”indiscriminate barrage of rocket attacks fired by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad into Israel” but said ”Canada supports Israel’s right to live in peace with its neighbours within secure boundaries and fully supports Israel’s right to assure its own security.”
However the federal government also urged Israel to demonstrate restraint.
Egypt and UN mediators have stepped up diplomatic efforts and the United Nations General Assembly will meet to discuss the violence on Thursday.
