The five shortlisted novels in this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize will be more accessible than ever. Canadians can now find book bundles the five novels in those familiar, portable outdoor book sharing libraries in neighborhoods across the country.
Angélique Lalonde is making her debut on the Scotiabank Giller final list for her short story collection Glorious Frazzled Beings described as a love song to the homes we make, keep, and break.
What Strange Paradise is a refugee story that follows two children pushed together by a random encounter, and the ways they overcome fear.
Miriam Toews, who’s been nominated for the Giller Prize twice before for A Complicated Kindness and All My Puny Sorrows made the final five for her latest novel Fight Night, Fight Night an inter generational story about a nine-year-old living with her pregnant mother, who’s also caring for her own elderly mother.
These must read books are now just steps from many of us in the hundreds of registered Little Free Library in neighbourhoods across the country.
“300 care packages with all five of the books shortlisted for the Giller Prize have been shared with Little Free Library stewards,” says Margret Aldrich, Communications Director with the non-profit.
“There are Little Free Libraries in all the Canadian provinces, all the United States, and in 110 countries around the world and they’re now on all seven continents, last year someone started a Little Free Library at the South Pole.”
Rounding out the top five finalists Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia for her debut novel The Son of the House that tells the story of two Nigerian women, both kidnapped and forced to spend days together in a dark room.
Jordan Tannahill is among four finalists making their first appearance on the Giller Prize shortlist. He’s nominated for his second novel The Listeners, that explores the fine lines between faith, conspiracy, and mania
The $100,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize is the biggest in Canadian literature. The winner will be announced Monday, November 8th at 9 p.m.
