In releasing the latest modelling, Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table says public health measures have helped to control the Omicron wave, but that any relaxation will mean increasing the spread of the virus.
”The size of any resurgence is difficult to predict and will depend on vaccination, the spread of Omicron, and changes in behaviour (e.g., mobility, masking),” were among the group’s findings.
”Hospitals are now caring for the highest number of people with COVID-19. Admissions are at highest levels across all age groups. ICU occupancy continues to be high. Staffing in hospitals remains critical.”
The modelling shows a range of scenarios for potential admissions, after restrictions were eased Monday, from between 2,000 to nearly 6,000 by mid-March.
As for the number of ICU patients, projections indicate they’ll remain high, falling from just shy of 600 down to around 300 or possibly rising to as high as 900.
The scenarios depend partly on how many have immunity, which is unknown given the limited access to PCR testing.
