Due to ongoing labour shortages in several key industries throughout various regions in Canada, the federal government has announced it will temporarily allow international students to work more hours each week.
Until now, international students have been capped at working 20 hours. However, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said the changes will be implemented on November 15 and be in effect until the end of 2023.
As of the latest report from Statistics Canada, there were nearly one million job vacancies across the country that companies have been unable to fill.
The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations welcomed the government’s announcement, saying it was a step toward improving international students’ educational experience.
Fraser also announced a pilot program to help automate the application process for students to extend their study permits. The pilot is aimed at reducing immigration backlogs and freeing up human resources to work on more complex issues.
