The federal riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore is staying Liberal.

High profile candidate Charles Sousa becomes the next Member of Parliament after winning yesterday’s byelection.

The former Ontario Liberal finance minister and panelist on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer received more than 51 percent of the vote.

Sousa beat his nearest rival, Conservative candidate Ron Chhinzer, by 14 points.

Sousa told reporters he’s proud of running a positive campaign, which he says was the opposite of his Conservative opponent.

“All they ran on was (by saying) Charles Sousa’s running with Justin Trudeau, nothing about what they would do,” Sousa explained.

As for what this result means for the new federal Conservative leader, poll analyst Philippe Fournier of 338Canada says the result doesn’t look great for Pierre Poilievre in the first vote since he took over as leader in September, though Fournier notes the byelection had a low voter turnout of 26 percent. Initial reports had the turnout as low as 15  percent.

Charles Sousa joins Libby Znaimer on Fight Back Tuesday at about 12:45.
