Commuters returning to work after the Christmas holiday are advised not to travel as tens of thousands of British rail workers strike again, disrupting services all week.

Approximately half of the railway lines in the United Kingdom are closed, with only one-fifth of services operating due to a long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at Network Rail and 14 train operators are striking for two 48-hour periods, starting on Tuesday and again from Friday.

With signalling staff among the 40,000 RMT members on strike, much of the railway in Wales, Scotland, and less populous areas of England will be closed, and service frequencies on major routes will be reduced to one train every hour.

The strikes are part of a larger labour unrest in the United Kingdom, which saw nurses and ambulance drivers walk off the job in December to demand higher pay.
