Four of Canada’s largest police associations are banding together to identify the root causes behind the killings of five police officers in the past four months.
In a joint statement, the unions say they’ll examine what they call a “growing and chronic” shortage of police officers and will review judicial and public policy frameworks.
In a TV interview, OPP Association President John Cerasuolo says everything will be on the table from sentencing to bail.
“If you ask any police officer, they will tell you, a lot of arrests are being made, people go to jail, and later that afternoon they’re dealing with the same people and if could be on various offences but for the most part, there are people out there, released on serious offences, and maybe we could do a bit more with electronic monitoring or even compliance checks.”
A funeral was held Wednesday for 28-year-old OPP Const. Greg Pierzchala, who was shot while responding to a call for a vehicle in a ditch west of Hagersville last month.
Four other police officers have been killed in the line of duty in Canada since September.
