TTC workers have voted overwhelming in support of a strike mandate.

Marvin Alfred is president of ATU Local 113 and says 9253 of the 12,000 employees he represents voted on Friday night and 98.28 percent voted to strike.

So what’s next and what does this mean for TTC riders?

“This mandate we now have the ability to bring this to the bargaining table to let them know that our members are prepared to let them know what it takes to get them that fair deal,” Alfred explained, “We will have a conciliator involved and hopefully there is some movement. If not, we’ll apply for a no board report and 17 days later, we’ll be in a legal trike position.

He says”the TTC needs to wake up, and if not, a strike is going to happen.”

The possible labour action is the first time in 13 years that unionized TTC workers are legally able to strike after a court ruling last year struck down Ontario’s designation of the TTC as an essential service.

The latest contract for the 12,000 TTC workers expired March 31st, 2024.
