The voice of one of Canada’s most outspoken opponents of “wokeism” has been silenced.

Newfoundland’s own Rex Murphy had thousands of memorable soundbites and witty written phrases, including a pointed dig at former Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman in 1999, after he’d called in the Canadian Armed Forces following a strong southern Ontario snowstorm.

“Mother Nature is a sadist. I draw on my Newfoundland experience for that observation, as the poor folks back home are still emerging from the onslaught of two April blizzards… real ones too… not Toronto’s.”

Murphy died yesterday of cancer, just one day after his final column appeared in the National Post.

The well-known broadcaster, commentator and pundit grew to fame as the host of a national call-in radio show, CBC Radio’s “Cross Country Checkup.” He was also a regular contributor for many years to CBC television.

Murphy also previously wrote for the Globe & Mail, and in 2019 launched RexTV, his own YouTube channel, in which he interviewed prominent figures in politics, business, academia, journalism and science.

Rex Murphy was 77.
