A foundation which evaluates artworks discovered in the apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt says it’s found 91 works so far – that were likely looted by the nazis – from their Jewish owners.
The German Lost Art Foundation says 502 pieces have been evaluated – including works by Paul Cezanne and Albrecht Duerer.
The foundation is backed by the German government. It’s mandate is to research the origin of art hoarded by Gurlitt – who died in 2014.
He had a treasure trove of more than 1,200 works in his Munich apartment – as well as an additional 250 in Salzburg, Austria.
His father, Hildebrand Gurlit, was an art dealer who traded in works that were confiscated by the nazis.
Earlier this year, hundreds of photo’s of Hildebrand’s art collection were published online – by Germany’s Federal Archives – as part of the effort to find their rightful owners.
